“Awakening the Artist Within”

A distinguished artist, Phan has lived and worked on the Big Island for over two decades, first in Kona, and now in Volcano. Her work has been included in a traveling exhibit organized by the Smithsonian Institution. She has presented lectures and slide shows for university audiences in Hawaii, on the mainland, and at the Colleges of Fine Arts in Hanoi and Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam.
Phan was twice exiled, first from North to South Vietnam, and later from South Vietnam to the U.S. In 1992 she returned to her homeland after an absence of 23 years. The grief, healing and reconciliation which resulted from that visit are important themes in her art.
